Center for Children's Advocacy
The Center for Children's Advocacy is a children's legal advocacy organization that provides individual client representation as well as advocacy for systemic changes to strengthen the legal rights of children. The Centerﾒs attorneys: 1. Represent abused and neglected children who are in the care of the stateﾒs child welfare system to ensure they have access to a consistent and effective education and quality health and mental health care; 2. Represent children and youth in Connecticutﾒs poorest cities, addressing factors that interfere with their ability to succeed in school, meeting with students at the Center's on-site school and hospital legal clinics, at community after-school programs, and at youth shelters and treatment facilities; 3. Prevent and divert children from involvement in the juvenile justice system by helping them access the education, mental health services and related services they need, including working in urban public school systems to hold school-based Truancy Courts that intervene to prevent truancy and avoid referral to the juvenile justice system; 4. Partner with doctors in low-income communities to improve childrenﾒs access to appropriate health care, reducing the social and environmental factors that adversely affect childrenﾒs health, operating through the Center's of?ces on-site at hospitals and community health facilities, to address issues such as substandard housing, inadequate income and bene?ts, disability rights, and access to education and health care. 5. improve the response of the education, juvenile justice, health and child welfare systems to the needs of poor children through systemic advocacy such as drafting and lobbying for legislation as well as filing class action lawsuits such as Sheff (the educational equity case). 6. Provide legal rights training for child protection attorneys, doctors, social workers, teachers, parents and youth,as well as publishing videos and brochures to educate teens about their legal rights and teach them how to advocate for themselves.
