Wikipedia: How Volunteers Build the World's Knowledge

On Thursday, March 9th, the Darien Library hosted guest speaker Katherine Maher. Katherine is the chief executive director of the Wikimedia Foundation, the non-profit organization behind Wikipedia. She spoke about how Wikipedia functions, the history of the Wikipedia, and the people behind it. Similar to Volunteer Square, the Wikimedia Foundation is a non-profit run by volunteers who have a goal to share their knowledge with the world. People from all around the globe can add to this online database of bountiful information. It was extrememly interesting to relate a large organization like Wikimedia to small volunteer groups in our communities in Connecticut. In reality, they are very similar. This proves that we can all do our part to make a difference!
