Tips for Winter Volunteering

It's January and while we haven't seen much snow yet, we know it's bound to come in the next month. Snowstorms may not necessarily impact your volunteer plans but it’s always good to be safe, prepared and creative. We put together some tips to consider for winter volunteering.

Check in advance! Be crystal clear on your agency’s weather policy from the word go. Check the weather forecast and call your supervisor, check for news updates, or check your E-mail and social media alerts announcing delays, closures or other changes of plans.

If you’re very concerned about the weather and the agency stays open, stay home. While we love volunteer commitment as much as our agencies do, you should never put yourself at risk when roads are getting slippery. This especially applies if you have a lengthy drive to your agency. Volunteer coordinators will understand the treacherous conditions faced by drivers and will be happy to reschedule your hours for another time, assuming they haven’t done so already.

A New Look for a New Year

It's a NEW look for the New Year!  We are thrilled to announce that we have redesigned and updated VolunteerSquare.com. Over the last four months, we focused on the user experience and spent a lot of time thinking about what a volunteer and an agency would want from our website. In addition to a makeover, we added sections that feature Volunteer Square programs and contests and news by town. Take a look and see what you think!

The addition of a Community section was very important to our team. We are committed to building and strengthening communities across Fairfield County and we have several initiatives that promote community engagement and celebrate the outstanding service work of volunteers across Fairfield County. In the community section we highlight our volunteer of the month, focus on special campaigns and feature things happening in Fairfield County. We encourage volunteers and agencies to share all the exciting things happening in their communities too and we look forward to featuring all of the great news here.

Tips for Volunteering in the New Year

Happy New Year! As we enter 2017, we know you have you thought about your New Years’ resolutions. While we know the most popular resolutions are to be more healthy and go to the gym, another one of the most popular resolutions every year is to volunteer more of your time. At VolunteerSquare.com we applaud everyone who undertakes commitments to more volunteering, but resolutions have a habit of being placed on hold, neglected, or abandoned altogether as the year moves along.

Here are some tips on how you can keep the volunteering momentum going.

1. Be Specific

Saying you want to volunteer is a very broad term. Doing what? What type of agency do you want to work with? What types of problems are you interested in solving? Just knowing what you really want to do as a volunteer will make a big difference in your commitment to your goals.
